The Imperial Hotel stands as one of Melbourne’s oldest and most storied pubs, with a history that dates back to 1852. Before it became the beloved venue it is today, the site was home to Noble’s Circus, hosting equestrian shows, concerts, and grand dances. By 1856, it had transformed into the famed Salle de Valentino, a lively theatre and dance hall where some of the city’s earliest entertainers performed.
In 1863, the site became Richardson’s Imperial Hotel, receiving one of Melbourne’s first liquor licences. Under the ownership of Nathaniel Levi, a prominent wine and spirits merchant, the hotel expanded over the years, incorporating neighboring buildings to reach its current size.
Despite modern updates—including a legendary rooftop bar—the Imperial Hotel still retains its 19th-century charm, standing as a proud landmark of Melbourne’s rich hospitality history.
